Cyprus News | Turkey May Drill in South’s Exclusive Economic Zone

According to Hurriyet Daily News (26.09.13) Turkey may be planning to infringe the south’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the next few weeks. The Barbaros Hayrettin Pasa seismic vessel, which has been conducting offshore oil and gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean, is waiting for Turkey’s Prime Minister to approve the action, Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said.

“The Barbaros Hayrettin Pasa is drilling off the coast of the Mersin-Iskenderun-Antalya region. It will work there, for three weeks more. Later, we will speak with Prime Minister [Recep Tayyip Erdogan] as to whether it will enter Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone. If the prime minister approves, the vessel could enter to the north or south of Cyprus because it has both a technical and political dimension.”

But on the other hand it may not and was just reminding the world, if it can be bothered to listen, that any oil companies believing they will have an easy time extracting fuel from the area, are much mistaken. It also seems to be aimed at the period the Cyprus Talks are due to start, or not to start, depending on who you listen to.
