Cyprus Problem – Resources Belong to People Not Governments
With both Greek and Turkish Cypriot governments arguing over who has rights to the gas off the Cyprus shore and with the south’s government insisting that the government in the south owns the island, Kudret Ozersay’s response is interesting. In the past Anastasiades had said that the gas belongs to the people of Cyprus, to the Turkish Cypriots as well, but now he is in power this has changed to the gas belongs to his government.
Ozersay insists that Turkish Cypriots have as much right to explore around the coast as Greek Cypriots as these resources belong to all Cypriots not to governments. Until now, with the possibility of a solution they have held off exploration but with the likelihood of a stalemate for yet another 40 years, why should they not find a source of finance to sustain themselves even if the south would prefer that they collapsed through lack of funds?
Of course, using Ozersay’s logic, the Greek Cypriots are equally welcome to explore off the north coast if they want.
