North Cyprus News | Lufthansa to Ercan Would Mean Turkey Opening Ports

Turkey’s EU Minister has told German Chancellor Angela Merkel that Ankara is ready to open its ports to Greek Cypriots if a German airline starts flights to Ercan Airport in North Cyprus.

“I’ll call your bluff. The Turkish Republic will open its sea ports, airports, and air space, if Lufthansa embarks on an expedition to Ercan Airport.”

He pointed out that allowing access to Greek Cypriot vessels was nothing new, Turkey’s ports were open to Greek Cypriot vessels until 1987 so letting Greek Cypriots into these ports would not mean official recognition of the south.

It is doubtful that Angela Merkel will aid Turkey in overcoming this obstacle to Turkey’s EU accession and to some this shows that the Ankara Protocol is not the real reason Turkey’s EU membership has stalled.
