An explosion in a coal mine mine in Soma, about 75 miles north-east of the Aegean coastal city of Izmir, has left more than 200 people dead and hundreds trapped. 780 people had been working in the mine at the time of the accident. Every miner has an oxygen mask but obviously they would only last a limited time. The privately owned mine had only been opened 10 months ago.

NCFP sends its condolences to the bereaved families of the brave men who died in this tragedy.
