The Star Kibris newspaper reminds us that tonight is the night of al-Qadr or Kadir Gecesi in Turkish. It is one of the most sacred of the Islamic religion, celebrated this year on the night between Saturday and Sunday 2 and 3 August; the 27th night of Ramadan. Traditionally it is the night when Prophet Muhammed received the first revelation in a cave on the mount of Hira. It is also a night of forgiveness, when good deeds performed are ‘better than the deeds of 1000 months which do not contain a Night of the Decree.’

The Sūrat al-Qad describes the ‘Night of Power’

We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power
And what will explain to thee what the Night of Power is?
The Night of Power is better than a thousand Months.
The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, with all decrees.
It’s all Peace!… until the rise of dawn (Morning Sun)!

The head of the religious affairs department, Talip Atalay, has said that some mosques in the north will remain open until the morning for praying and that celebrations in all mosques will begin at 21.00 hours. They will also be held at Hala Sultan Mosque in Larnaca but those who want to attend should bring food with them because no iftar dinner will be offered. The celebrations program will end at 21.50 hours.
