Afrika newspaper (02.07.13) is alleging that the Turkish AKP government is using non-payment of TRNC civil servants salaries to blackmail Sibel Siber’s interim government. Previously the AKP government had put the condition of selling Ercan airport in return for paying civil servants’ salaries, now is asking Siber’s government to accept conditions including the conducting of Quran lesson, the establishing of a religious college and the signing of the economic protocol. According to Afrika news paper, “the government which in the past did not accept these demands yesterday voted in favour of them.”

Reacting to these developments, the Turkish Cypriot Primary Teachers’ Union (KTOS) and the Turkish Cypriot Primary Teachers’ Union (KTOEOS) have said they will boycott the forthcoming 28 July elections saying that they “will not go into the ballot box to vote for a puppet government.”

Afrika newspaper reported that according to prime minister Sibel Siber there is no problem between her government and Turkey and that the salary payment delay was due to ‘technical issues’. She also blamed the previous government, the National Unity Party (UBP), for the delay saying that there was no money left in the budget and so they had to wait for money to come from Turkey.
