Cyprus Bailout | ‘Just Relax, There Are No Euro Worries in north Cyprus’

The north is upsetting the south by launching a tourism campaign in the UK with slogans such as ‘Just Relax, There Are No Euro Worries in north Cyprus’. This slogan is one of many pointing out to tourists that they can still visit Cyprus but avoid the crisis in the south. They can avoid the Euro all together and instead change their money into Turkish Lira. Here are some examples of similar advertisements: ‘Do you now this? North Cyprus is not in the Euro zone’. ‘It does not use the Euro’. ‘We are the other half part of Cyprus, we are separate, we use the Turkish Lira’.

Countering criticism from the south that they are exploiting the situation, advertisers point out that in the past the south used similar tactics with adverts displaying ‘Don’t go to the north, it’s under military occupation.’ It is also being pointed out that the north is having to counter the impression that whole of Cyprus is having a problem. They want to prevent tourists cancelling holidays because they think that businesses throughout Cyprus, particularly hotels and restaurants, will be affected by cashflow problems.
