Cyprus News – Phew What a Scorcher!

Temperatures up to 42ºC (108ºF) are expected in the next few days, although on the coast the temperature will probably be a lot cooler, around 36ºC (97ºF). It is when temperatures hit these levels that holiday-makers start drinking more beer in the mistaken belief that this will cool them down. The end result is often dehydration and in rare cases possibly even death:

“This is the loss of water from the body, and with it important blood salts like potassium and sodium which play a vital role in the function of organs such as the kidneys, brain and heart.

It can lead to confusion, lethargy and problems with breathing and heart rate.”¹

Obviously, drink more water or non-carbonated drinks such as fruit juice.

For residents, this is also the beginning of water shortages and expensive tankered water. That is, for those who have had water up until now. There are many who seem not have the basic necessity of mains water as part of the infrastructure that should have come with their property.

Also remember to avoid the midday sun, unless you are a mad dog or an Englishman, to paraphrase Noel Coward.
