Greek Cypriots spent $1m using airlines in the TRNC

Greek Cypriots are increasingly using the internationally unrecognised Ercan airport in north Cyprus to travel abroad, according to the credit card company JCC. In the first six months of 2010, spending on airlines in the north (and Antalya) using credit cards issued in the south reached €731,720.

Evidence suggests that Greeks Cypriots can increasingly be heard at Ercan airport. It is thought that flying via Istanbul, rather than strike-ridden Athens, has become a more attractive way to reach the rest of Europe. Unfortunately now that Cyprus Turkish Airlines has gone into liquidation they may have to rethink this strategy.
