Julian Assange | The Wikileak Rape

Julian Assange helped Bradley Manning spread around the world US classified information coming from US Embassies. Many governments were upset. The US government have imprisoned Bradley Manning for over 2 years, without a trial, for passing on reports that came to be known as the Iraq War logs and Afghan War logs. It was the largest set of restricted documents ever leaked to the public. Much of it was published by WikiLeaks or its media partners between April and November 2010. Manning’s trial is due to start in September 2012 and although the crime he is accused of carries the death sentence, prosecutors say they’ll not be seeking it.

Julian Assange’s Wikileaks was set up to allow whistle-blowers to anonymously release evidence of illegal activities at the places they worked. Bradley Manning released documents among which was a video of an Iraqi airstrike

“It showed an American helicopter firing on a group of men in Baghdad; one of the men was carrying an anti-tank grenade launcher (an RPG-7), and two were Reuters employees carrying cameras that the pilots mistook for guns. The helicopter fired on a van that stopped to help the injured members of the first group; two children in the van were wounded and their father killed. The Washington Post wrote that it was this video, viewed by millions, that put WikiLeaks on the map.”

Then the situation became strange with Assange being accused of rape in Sweden and an arrest warrant issued. But then:

“The arrest warrant was cancelled on 21 August 2010 by one of Stockholm’s Chief Prosecutors, Eva Finne, and the investigation was downgraded to only cover lesser allegations. Finn√© said in a statement to the press: “I don’t think there is reason to suspect that he has committed rape.”

However, just to show the confusion surrounding the charges against Assange:

“The warrant was subsequently re-issued by another Swedish Chief Prosecutor Marianne Ny on 1 September 2010 who considered that the allegations could be classed as rape after all.”

There are also suspicions that the statements given by Assange’s accusers contain contradictions and anomalies but his lawyer had been refused access to them in order to confirm this. An outline of Assange lawyer’s witness statement confirms this. It is also alleged that the original police report showed:

“absence of alleged rape; absence of alleged force or injury; admission in both cases of consensual sex on the same occasions as the allegations; and splitting of a condom used with complainant 1 rather than failure to use one.”

The way that Assange’s supporters see it is that because he released secret US material he is seen as a terrorist by that government and they will do anything to get their hands on him in order to save face. This includes manipulating the Swedish rape case so that after he is extradited to Sweden and found guilty they can then more easily extradite a convicted rapist to the US. This will send a message to other potential whistle-blowers that releasing the truth can result in life imprisonment or even death.
