Happy New Year!

A Happy New Year to all our readers! The year starts with the old YTL banknotes being withdrawn from circulation today. The YTL banknotes can still be redeemed at branches of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey for a period of 10 years but will be worthless from January 1st 2020. For those who do not know it the Turkish lira (TL) is the current currency.

The year also starts with Cyprus44 out of action for the third time in less than 3 months. There has never been any explanation as to why hackers have targeted the site although speculation has included GCs, jealous competitors and a banned member. When NCFP was targeted there was an unusual pattern of activity from IP addresses originating from the UK. A brief investigation established that these addresses had been involved in other attacks but as NCFP has so far been left alone the investigation went no further than the creation of a file which might be useful if there was a future attack

No smoking in restaurants and bars in Cyprus? Although this ban will be enforced in the south it will be interesting to see if the same level of enforcement will be applied in the north. Perhaps more GCs will travel to north Nicosia for a fag and a beer?
