Fall-out from property case – according to Wikileaks a 2009 US diplomatic cable speculated that TC, Russian and Israeli property investment groups would be picking up GC properties in the north at “rock-bottom prices.” This was because of the fallout expected from the Oramses’ property case failure. However, in reality there was no panic selling. There are estimated to be 15,000 GC properties in EU citizen possession, 5,000 of whom are British. There is also speculation about the position of properties of the “100,000” TCs who left pre-1974. Another interesting comment concerns a possible law suit back then against EU tourists using the Dome Hotel in Kyrenia, expectation was they would each have to pay €100-200 in compensation. The cable also quotes the chief TC Cyprus Settlement negotiator as responding by saying, “how can he (Christofias) expect us to use less than 20% of the land? We need to have an economy here too.”
