Jennifer Lopez to pay business in North Cyprus $40 million in damages?

Cratos Hotel  in northern Cyprus has threatened Jennifer Lopez with a $40 million lawsuit after she cancelled a concert there for ‘political’ reasons. The chief executive of the Turkish company which runs the hotel and casino complex said that unless she changed her mind about the July 24 booking the company had no alternative but to go ahead with a lawsuit for damages. They say that so far her contract has not been terminated and they still expect her to be there as contracted. The reason her team gives on her website for her non appearance is not covered by any clause in the contract she signed.

Feza Firat, a representative for the hotel, said that Lopez had been misinformed about the situation in Cyprus and had been “led to believe there was a war going on”. He also said that the fee had been paid to her and she was expected to fulfil her part of the contract.

There are some doubts that any insurance policy she may have will take her “political” stand as a good reason for cancelling the concert so that she would probably have to finance the defence out of her own pocket. There is a possibility that she may circumvent attempts by Greek Cypriot supporters to stop her performing by changing her mind and attending at the last moment, pleading that she cannot afford to risk having to pay the $40m damages.
