TRNC title deeds ‘just as valid as pre-74 GC ones’ – says former chief justice, Taner Erginal. He also called attention to a 1907 law concerning ‘squatters’ rights’ which gave property rights to properties occupied for 10 years without dispute. This law was apparently wrongly applied to Maras during the British colonial period (Editor: upset that Turkey fought against them in WW1, I believe?) and was made to supercede the Law of Religious Foundations applied to vakiflar property titles which was issued in perpetuity. The later was a specific law which should have taken priority over the general squatters’ rights law. Taner Erginal’s argument is that if squatters’ rights laws apply to the GCs in Maras then they should apply to TRNC titles issued after 1983. He also argues that this means the Orams should have their property returned to them and compensated for their loss.

Letter – careless drivers to blame for accidents – Editor: stating the obvious which seems to be not so obvious to drivers involved in these accidents, says he after a short car journey which nearly brought him into a head-on collision with a car driven by an idiot with a kebab stuffed in his face as he sped round a blind bend on a narrow road. I wish I could say that was the only incident on that short journey.
