Singer’s team Demand $10m – Julio Iglesias is at the heart of a legal battle over a TRNC concert no-show that has now seen angry hotel owners launch a case against his talent agency. Net Holding is planning to take International Creative Talent Agency to the Court of European Arts to get back the $300,000 advance the company kept after cancelling a contract to have the 68 year old singer perform. The fresh legal action comes after the agency,which cancelled Iglesias’s performance in October 2010 under the pressure of Greek Cypriot lobbying, filed a law suit against “the TRNC” and Voyager Cyprus for $10million damages. Despite sending other acts to the country and having a Turkish partner, bosses at ICTA claimed they did not know North Cyprus was an “illegal organisation.”Details of the $700 million scheme to transport water to the TRNC from Turkey have been revealed to Cyprus Today – just as January rainfall hit record levels. The sustained rain has filled some reservoirs to overflowing and reawakened long dry streams and rivers. The huge water project, dubbed the “project of the century” is expected to end drought problems and improve sanitation and agriculture.
Eroğlu rejects bank loan Bill – President Derviş Eroğlu has refused to sign a controversial Bill aimed at regulating out-of-control loan charges. The refusal has been hailed by interest rate victim groups, who oppose the Bill because it tackles only existing loans, as “another chance” for the government to amend the flaws in the law approved by MP’s last month. Dr. Eroğlu said he had refused to sign it into the law because “problems would continue for future loan takers and no obstacle has been put into the Bill to prevent future problems.”
Court pursues £308K of assets – Ex bank executive, Terry Thackrah, lived a life of luxury in the TRNC on proceeds of crime. If he does not pay up he faces an extra 3 years and 3 months in prison.
Expat’s deportation deadline – authorities have set a deadline for Nigel Watson(see last Saturday’s CT) . The Director of Basic Health Service said “Mr Watson has been given until Thursday to pay 400tl for more tests in Turkey. If he does not pay this figure then we will have to advise immigration accordingly. “Mr Watson said he has not been notified of any time limit by the authorities and at present he does not have the money having already spent over 240tl on tests in the TRNC and complains that they won’t even accept paying for me if my result comes back negative.
Protesters warn of shock tactics – The Communal Existence Movement aims to oppose sale of state assets. The group said they were not going to give the public prior warning of the various forms of action they plan to stage, so as to take people by surprise. They warned their protest was indefinite and might culminate in a general strike.
New Year rainfall hits record breaking level – Rainfall records were broken during the first 25 days of January. The Karpaz has hit records and has had 93 per cent above average rainfall. The TRNC in general has had 51 per cent above average.
