Popular Science News | Let there not be Light

Popular Science News | There is a great deal of research to show that street lighting is not good for plants and animals, including Man. Light pollution has always been an annoyance to those who like to stargaze but recent research shows that the population of insects around street lights changes. It is not just that there are more predatory and scavenger insects eating other insects, it’s the impact of the loss of species, particularly on bird populations, that is worrying.

There are many social arguments for having street lighting, such as safety from accidental falls as well as from street crime. There are also energy conservation ideas such as adding motion detectors to the lamps so they become brighter when someone approaches. But, considering the state of street lights in North Cyprus, and the number of recent power outages, perhaps it’s not an issue we should worry about here?
