Daily Images – Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was one of the foremost illustrators of his day. Born in Lewisham, he studied at the Lambeth School, and was influenced by Cruikshank and Beardsley. Rackham specialized in children’s book art; he illustrated most children’s classics of his day, including Tales from Shakespeare, A Christmas Carol, The Romance of King Arthur, The Wind in the Willows, the works of Washington Irving, and many others. Advances in colour printing allowed Rackham to explore the finest nuances of colour and shadow, giving children’s books a new sophistication.
