Hackney’s Nefise Hussein launches her first photo exhibition ‘Made in Hackney’; in the oldest home made in Hackney, Sutton House.
From 9th – 28th July 2011 visitors to Sutton House’s contemporary art gallery will be able to see how:
– photography connected Nefise to her relatives living in Cyprus and Turkish Cypriot heritage
“Looking through the family albums was the way I ‘met’ and got to know my grandparents. I was always fascinated by the people in the photographs and the Cypriot way of life.”
– Her journey from helping her mum who was a machinist working in factories in Hackney, through to study Fine Art Photography & Design at university
“I remember learning how to sew labels into clothes using a sewing machine. This is just one of the ideas behind why I chose to name this exhibition ‘made in Hackney’.”
– Nefise shares her passion for photography with the community.
“I have been running a photography club for two years at Berger Primary School. I believe the photographic process is an interesting and practical way to engage with children – it encourages creativity, self expression and promotes inclusion. If it’s not too much could you also add in “I have noticed that children feel a real sense of achievement when they produce photographs and see their work exhibited.”
As part of Nefise’s commitment to sharing the magic of her photography 30% of any proceeds from the sale of her photos will be donated to Hackney People First – a local self advocacy service for adults with learning disabilities – www.peoplefirstltd.com
