Daily Images – Krakow in Poland is a city of contrast, mainly because of its chequered history. Developed over many centuries, as the city expanded, so too did the architectural achievements of its builders.Having escaped much of the destruction endured by Poland during 20th-century wars, Krakow’s architectural monuments can be seen in historical order by simply walking from the city centre out towards its more modern districts.

And in complete contrast is the historical fact that after the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany at the start of World War II, Krakow was turned into the capital of Germany’s General Government. The Jewish population of the city was moved into a walled zone known as the Krakow Ghetto, from which they were sent to extermination camps such as Auschwitz and the concentration camp at Płaszow.
