Daily Images – firework displays are an ancient 10th century Chinese tradition which was introduced into the West in the 17th century. The firework was actually invented by the Chinese in the 7th century and gradually became part of the culture, an important accompaniment to festivals such as the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) and the Mid-Autumn Festival

The sale of fireworks is restricted in the Republic of Ireland and possessing fireworks without a licence brings a a €10,000 fine and/or a five year prison sentence. The punishment for having or lighting fireworks in a public place is the same.
